I made the decision to get my Masters because I had been feeling like I was part of something that wasn't working broken in a sense. I go to work everyday excited, full of energy, engaging lessons and it is still a struggle to get my students on board. They see no value in their education they don't see how it connects to their lives. It makes me so sad but as I watch the news read the paper more and more I just wonder where we are headed. As a country we need to show our young people we value them and care about our future by providing them with their basic needs. Our kids are hungry, struggle with emotional issues and family problems, as well as financial strains. Parents are working so many hours there is little time for their children and quality family time. Kids don't play like they should, they lack experiences. When I read the first 3 chapters of our book things really began to connect for me all the feelings that I have been having, so depressing. What are we doing to our kids? It is just crazy to hear how other countries are making education such a priority because they understand the connection to the future of the country in the young people. That must really empower their youth to care and feel a true sense of belonging. I wish that education was valued more here instead of putting money towards arming teachers let help pay for college or trade schools lets give our young people hope.
I am so grateful for people like Jo Boaler who are empowered to start an education revolution! That is what I want to be a part of as I continue to learn to be the best me I can be for our students. I am very excited to learn with my cohort as we go through this educational journey together.
