I find it interesting how my awareness to my students feeling, engagement , and understanding is heightened. ( In a good way) I am going to journal and reflect maybe forever now since new students bring new challenges and celebrations. Last week well really Friday was my first reflection since our class but I have been having these questions for sometime now and after teaching Summer School I have even more. I taught Summer School at New Tech with incoming freshman , the College Readiness Academy and this year I brought the robotics and tried improved lessons out on these students. I was clearer with my delivery, I had typed directions at the top directing students where to access the lessons and codes and these freshman really excelled. Last week I worked on some of those same lessons with the same handouts and I must say my students still struggled so much. I do think the improved delivery made it smoother for them to eventually find their ways; but still so different with these two different populations. I had an IA in my room who was with me last year and she said she liked the way I was teach this year it was more clear to her, this was nice feedback. My students always start with I can't do this, I can't find that, I can't , I can't , I can't. So as I go on my journey to help them develop a Positive Math Mindset an I can attitude I have so many questions.
1. How do young people best learn math? 2. Why is it okay to say I am not a math person and just stop trying? 3. How do other countries teach math who have higher achievement than our country? 4. Why don't we celebrate the learning that happens when we make mistakes? 5. How can we get our students to think deeper in math beyond the correct answer? 6. What types of curriculum in math supports developing a Positive Math Mindset? 7. What further training do I need to be prepared to have my student learn math deeply? 8. How can we help our students overcome their fear of math? 9. Can the damage that has been done by repeated failure be reversed? 10. How can I help my students develop their thinking skills?
